What is the On Deck Circle?
In Baseball (and Softball) the next batter in line to bat traditionally waits on the on-deck circle in the foul territory. This is colloquially referred to as being in-the-hole.
The on-deck circle can simple be a circle in bare dirt, a circle painted onto artificial turf or at the college and professional level, the on-deck circle in made from artificial material such as turf or carpet. Teams paint or add their logo in the center.
What are the Benefits of a quality On Deck Circle?
Baseball On Deck Circles provide the next batter their defined space and a quality on deck circle helps to reduce high-traffic wear. This assists field managers in maintenance while providing a great spot for the team logo or sponsorship opportunity.
Is the On Deck Circle the right place to stretch?
No, warm up stretches should be done before you step up to the On Deck Circle. There are 4 critical routines that should be done before you step up at-bat, so stretching before hand will allow you to focus on the critical preparations.
Observe the pitches thrown from the pitcher to be able to judge the speed and break on each pitch, so you are ready to step up to the plate.
Watch and study the pitcher to see his delivery to home plate. Your rhythm and timing are critical to hitting the ball well. By carefully watching the pitcher you can decide where to start your load and when to get your foot down for your swing. Being in sync with the pitcher ensures good rhythm and timing.
Time on the On Deck Circle allows you to gather your thoughts before you step up to hit. Focusing on confidence with good and positive thoughts, with a focus on how well you are going to hit the ball when you step up to the plate.
Having a specific plan for your time in-the-hole will make you a better hitter. “You can’t think and hit at the same time”. But, being prepared, aware of the pitcher and knowing what situation you are stepping into will make you a smarter hitter.
Optimum preparation at the Baseball On Deck Circle will make you a better and smarter hitter.
